What are Dermal Fillers?

Collagen is a protein that acts as a support structure for the skin, and unfortunately it breaks down with age. Older skin tends to lose its tone and elasticity as it loses its collagen supply. Fortunately, Collagen replacement therapy using injectable fillers that can smooth facial lines (e.g. nasolabial folds) on the surface of the skin help the skin to regain its youthful appearance. This procedure complements Botox and Thermage (Radiofrequency) treatments and can take years of your face. Injectable dermal fillers can also enhance facial features such as 'plumping' thin lips, augmenting nose bridge and cheek bones.

How Dermal Fillers Works

The aging process causes the face to lose underlying fat and collagen, the skin starts to sag and wrinkle. Wrinkle fillers, commonly known as fillers, can give the skin back its plumped up, youthful appearance. Soft tissue fillers designed to "fill in" facial indentations made by fine lines and wrinkles include fat, collagen and hyaluronic acid. The effect is temporary because the body eventually breaks down these fillers. Results last from several months to about a year.

What happens during Dermal Fillers treatment?

Pre Treatment

Our doctors will assess if you are a suitable candidate for this treatment and which type of filler is more appropriate for you. Generally a local anaesthetic cream is applied to the areas involved before the treatment.

During Treatment

The filler is administered by injection using a very fine gauge needle into the site where enhancement is needed. The amount of fillers used will depend on the degree of wrinkling and the site of correction. This simple procedure that takes a few minutes to do and has fairly little downtime.

Post Treatment

This treatment produces immediate results, with minimal and transient swelling or redness, and the results can last up to a year! There is minimal recovery time. Most people are able to go back to work immediately. Occasionally, there may be some bruising or swelling that will go away after 2-3 days.
