Acne vulgaris is caused by inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit (the hair follicle and oil gland). This can lead to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and even larger lesions called nodular and cystic acne.


Acne should be treated early to avoid permanent scaring and there are numerous treatments and strategies to control and treat acne including topical treatments with medication as well as antibiotics orally as well as oral vitamin A.


Other treatments include chemical peels and certain lasers which have been shown to help with oil production.
